Warrington Town 2 Great Harwood Town 1

Town go down in tough encounter

Great Harwood Town went down to a narrow defeat in a tough, uncompromising top of the table clash against a Warrington Town side well up with Harwood and the rest of the promotion contenders in the North West Counties Second Division. In a match dominated by a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch, Harwood took the lead through Phil Greenhalgh midway through the first half and held the advantage until 20 minutes from the end.
But two goals in six minutes by Warrington put paid to Harwood’s chances and with promotion rivals Clitheroe and Droylsden sharing the spoils at Shawbridge, Harwood missed the chance to go level on points with the leaders.
But just as alarming for Harwood manager Rick Grogan was the fact that Harwood ended the match with no fewer than four casualties who must all be rated doubtful for tonight’s vital Lancashire Dairy Crest Floodlit Cup match at Lancaster.
With the wind behind them in the first half, Harwood took the lead in the 23rd minute when Greenhalgh latched on to a neat through ball from midfield, rounded the Warrington keeper and slotted the ball home. Shortly afterwards Greenhalgh had another chance from a similar situation, but put the ball into the side netting.
With 20 minutes to go Warrington gained a controversial penalty and the spot kick was put away to level the scores. Six minutes later, Warrington scored the goal which ultimately clinched victory for them, as Harwood keeper Phil Maher failed to cut out a cross from the right, the ball hit his chest and the rebound was slotted home by a Warrington forward. The result leaves the two sides absolutely level on points and goal difference, two points behind Second Division leaders Clitheroe. Warrington however have two games in hand over Harwood. Droylsden have the same number of points as Harwood and Warrington, and despite an inferior goal difference, have three matches in hand on Harwood.

Great Harwood Town: Maher, Vercoe (sub Moran 43 mins), Dobson, Martin, Proctor, Bowman, Carradice, McGee, Marren, Greenhalgh, Foy.
