CAPTAIN-Bob Jones

Possibly the most successful season in the club’s history began and ended with wins with the first defeat not arriving until November. Great Harwood legend, goalkeeper Bob Jones, played in all but two first team games and helped the side to register the league’s tightest defence, conceding just 35 goals in 42 Lancs. Combination games.

Leading scorer Geoff Shaw scored 39 goals from 51 appearances in all competitions and he was ably assisted by Ian Hope 31 from only 38 games, Mick Connelly with 22, Dave Freeman with18, Don Bramley 15, and famous Lancahire cricketer Jack Simmons with 9 goals from just 21 appearances.

The team led the division from start to finish and despite having to play 13 games in 30 days at the end of the campaign, the side remained largely unchanged.

Just 24 hours after a Lancashire Junior Cup Final against Morecambe, where the team was narrowly beaten 1-0 at Deepdale, they had to travel to Bacup Borough for a league game, which was played on a very heavy pitch. Tiredness looked to have got the better of them as the home side led 2-0 but incredibly Harwood stormed back to win 3-2 and clinch the title. With the score at 2-0, substitute John Chatburn was brought on and his fresh legs helped to turn the tide with a young David McDowell, the only change from the previous evening’s game, notching the winner.

The final game saw the League’s points record broken as Bacup Borough were beaten 5-0 at the Showground.

PEN PICTURES

BOB JONES(goalkeeper). Bob came to the club from Blackburn Rovers when he could have stayed in first class football. His safe hands have given the defence that extra confidence they needed. Must rate as the best ‘keeper in the Combination last season. Has no regrets about coming into non-league football and on the contrary says that he has never been happier.

JOHN BRAY(Player/Manager, right back). Has been the guiding light and inspiration behind us all. John played many matches last season under the handicap of a recurring thight strain but was rarely, if at all, outplayed.

PETER JACKSON(right back). Peter joined the Club from Blackburn Rovers at the end of the 1967 season and has improved tremendously since then. His positional play is excellent, his tackling hard and his speed gives him a remarkable power of recovery. Has a flair for attacking and has split many defences during the season with long incisive runs. Recently signed proffessional and is a great prospect.

NICK BAILEY(left back). Nick has been with the Club for five years and improves every season. His solid tackling tends to give him mastery over the winger in the early stages of the game. Is fast and has turned the tide of many matches with a goal at the opportune moment.

GORDON ATHERTON(right half). A brilliant attacking wing half. Played league soccer with Bury and Swindon Town. Travels from Bury every week and is certainly one of the most poular players from the point of view from the spectators. Sense of humour second to none and never knows when to give up.

CHRIS SIMMS(wing half). Signed midway through the season from Clitheroe and was the main reason why Clitheroe beat us in the F.A. Cup. A tower of strength in his role of sweeper which he prefers, although is not averse to an occasional foray upfield. Played league soccer with Blackburn Rovers.

IAN PROCTER(centre half). Solid as a rock, Ian was with Accrington Stanley before that club sadly folded up. Has improved tremendously in the past season and his height of 6 ft. 2 ins. Helps to make him virtually impassable in the air. Fancies himself as the team comedian.

BASIL REDHEAD(centre half/wing half). Has unlimited potential. Bas has mastered the difficult jobs of wing half and centre half equally well and is now seriously challenging for a first team place.

KENNY MILLAR(inside forward/wing half). A constructive ball playing inside forward who can fill the wing half berth with ease. Did not live up to his early promise last season, and in fact seemed to be coming back to form as the season closed.

MICK CONNELLY(outside right). Signed from Chorley and was an immediate success. Has left many defenders trailing with his dramatic turn of speed and numerous goalkeepers stranded with his rocket shot. Holds the record as the only player to win two L.F.A. Floodlit Cup Winners Medals ( once with Chorley).

GEOFF SHAW(inside forward). A plucky little fighter with an almost uncanny knack for goalscoring. Was top goalscorer last season with thirty-nine goals. Signed from Chorley, but as a youth played in the Central League with Blackburn Rovers. Was watched by Football League scouts last season.

IAN HOPE(inside forward). An astute signing from Premier League outfit Netherfield. Came with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer and justified that with thirty-one goals. His brilliant ball control can reverse the course of any match at ant time and he has given the forward line the individual flair that it needed. Was with Preston North End for some years.

DAVE FREEMAN(centre forward). Dave has scored over 250 goals for Great Harwood in seven seasons. Last year adapted to his new deep lying role well. His strong but fair tackling controls the midfield. Links with the defence in the 4-2-4 system used so well last season.

DON BRAMLEY(outside left). A fast raiding winger. Don came back to the Club from Accrington Stanley. Unfortunately broke his leg at Kirkby Town and will be unfit until at least Christmas. His experience was badly missed during the latter part of the season.

BERNARD BALDWIN(inside forward). Signed from Blackburn Rovers at the same time as Peter Jackson. Is a slightly built ball player and has great potential.

DAVID McDOWELL(forward). Eighteen-year-old David plays anywhere along the line with equal verve and skill. Will go far if his potential is realised. Scored the goal which brought the Championship to Harwood.

LEO GORNALL(winger). One of the most experienced players on the books, Leo can play on either wing. Has been with numerous clubs during his long career, but began as a youth with Preston North End.

JOHN CHATBURN(wing half). Due to the signing of Atherton and Sims, has not appeared regularly in the first team. But when he did, never let them down. Has been the main inspiration behind the reserve team honours.

JACK SIMMONS(inside forward or centre forward).Tall striker, been exceptionally unlucky with injuries, but always comes back. His spirit an example to us all. Scorer of many vital goals for the Club. Cricketer with the Lancashire County Cricket Club during the summer months.

J. WOODS(goalkeeper). Joined the Club a year ago from Blackburn Rovers. Played a significant part in our reserve team’s successes of last year due to his sound goalkeeping. Signed professional during the season. Made two appearances in the first team and played well.

MARTIN WRIGHT(full back). Been with the Club several years. Mainly a reserve team player last year, but has played over 100 first team games at Great Harwood. You can always count on 100% effort from Martin. Thiry-six reserve team games.

ROGER LECHARPENTIER(half back). Only played six game slast year. Had persistent injury problems. Joined the Club from Darlington two years ago. Hoping to be fit again for August, 1969.

BRIAN PEMBERTON(full back). Utility player. Ex-Accrington. Made only two first team appearances last year. Been with the Club several seasons and always gives his best. Twenty-seven reserve team games 1968-69.

WALTER McDONALD(centre half). Reserve team skipper. Played well all the season. Sustained serious leg injury which kept him out of the side at the end of the season.

KEITH WAREHAM(winger). Young reserve team winger. Blackburn born. Plenty of potential for the future-twenty-eight appearnaces, eight goals.

DAVID STEPHENSON(winger). Strong raiding winger. Scored many vital goals for the reserve team last season-thirty seven reserve appearnaces, ten goals.

KEIRNAN CARR(full back). Made thirty-six appearnaces with the reserves last season. The team’s penalty taker. Scored seven times with spot kicks.

RAY HOBSON(inside forward). Only joined the Club in January 1969. Experienced inside forward. Been with many Combination clubs. Played mainly with the reserve team at Great Harwood. Scored ten goals.

TONY FARRELL(wing half). Played twenty-three games in the reserve team last season. Made the occasional first team appearance. Been with the Club three seasons.

JACKIE WAREING(inside forward). Rejoined the Club late in the season. Played twelve reserve team games, scored five goals. Played in the Lancashire Junior Cup Final at Deepdale.
