Away Day Robins
North Ferriby United
FA Cup August 31st 1996
This trip took place before the official Blackburn & Darwen Robins had really been formed. The tie was played on Humberside and I’m pretty sure that it was the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
Harwood were optimistic about the new campaign having finished in 9th place the previous April, and had made a decent start to the season beating Harrogate Town 1-0 at the Showground before drawing 1-1 at Netherfield.
Yours truly set off on a beautiful sunny day and arrived in Hull at lunchtime. After dropping off my better half at the shops, my daughter Stephanie and I made our way to the ground which is just a stones throw away from the Humber Bridge. The setting was idyllic, lovely tidy ground, cricket match on the adjoining field and 70 odd degrees.
After a relaxing pint in the very friendly clubhouse, we made our way to the fence behind the goal to put the flag up but before we could, United scored. Harwood battled to get back into the game but the hosts looked very dangerous up front and were far more likely to add to the score. The Robins made little headway in attack so we’d need to change the tactics after the break.
As the 2nd half started I began to hoist the flag on a different part of the ground, and as I did, United scored again!
Another goal ended the contest and some Harwood players lost their heads, committing some nasty fouls on the home players who were by now playing some cracking football and really outclassing us. The 4th went in near the end to rub salt in the wounds of the visiting players. Oh well, it was a nice day out apart from the result. Now I’m going off memory here but I’m almost certain that ex-League player Andy Flounders was playing up front for North Ferriby and he was a real class act and we weren’t the first or last team that season to suffer at his hands(or feet!). A couple of years earlier Dean Windass had been released by Hull City, signed for United who turned him into a star and then sold him back to the Tigers for £60,000.
Rally Round the Robins!
