GREAT HARWOOD TOWN’S season – which just a few months ago promised so much – came to a disastrous close with a heavy home defeat by North West Counties First Division side Leyland in the final group game of the Dairy Crest Floodlit Cup.
At one stage, Harwood were hot favourites to qualify for the final from the group but Thursday’s match was purely academic, in fact played ten days after Horwich RMI, who qualified from Harwood’s group, had won the trophy with a 2-0 win over South Liverpool in the final.
Harwood, who lost Stuart Lally after 20 minutes with a face injury, never got a look-in against Leyland,
The visitors were 2-0 up at the break and although it was the final eight minutes of the match before they added their other three goals, the Motors were always in control. McCarty scored four of their goals and their other was deflected home by a Harwood defender in a goalmouth melee.

LINE-UP : Maher, Vercoe, Dobson, Martin, Mooney, Moran, Foy, Greenhalgh, Walker, Clayton, Lally (sub. Grogan 20 mins).
