Darwen 1 Great Harwood Town 3
The Robins began the campaign at neighbours Darwen who had just been relegated from the North West Counties League Division One. This report is taken from our dear old chums at the Accrington Observer.
Great Harwood Town, who almost disappeared off the soccer map during the close season, came back twice as strong on Saturday when they beat Darwen 3-1.
Goals from McGee, Bowman and Foy (penalty) were enough to see off the Anchor men who are themselves searching for a good start after being relegated from the N.W.C.L. Division One last term.
In the end however, it was Harwood boss Rick Grogan who went home happier than Darwen chief Pat Lynch who recently quit the hot seat at Accrington Stanley.
The match could have been a much closer affair had Harwood keeper Leeming not saved a penalty by Arthur, but the away side worked hard for their win and Baz McGee was particularly outstanding.
Harwood chairman, Mr. Tom Edwardson said:
“I’m absolutely delighted. It was a very good performance and I am feeling optimistic about the rest of the season.”
The Reds followed up the win with a 2-1 home success against Salford.
